He faked his death in order to be beyond suspicion until he decided to reveal himself, took what he needed, and left to Hueco Mundo to prepare for war.
He lives to deceive. Even his zanpakutou's shikai ability serves that purpose. Under no circumstances should you allow yourself or anyone you care about to be subjected to his shikai. He calls it's effects complete hypnosis. Even if you know what you're seeing is an illusion, you still see only the illusion. Most shinigami here are already affected, including myself.
