[Sasuke drops his PCD as he's running from room to room to room at Hitsugaya's place. Doors shut and open in quick succession as it's clear that Sasuke's looking for something, or rather, someone. Well, someone is frantically searching, anyway.
When he finally speaks, his voice shakes with a hint of panic.]

Hesitantly, he crouched down, taking one last look around the house before taking one of Sasuke's arms and wrapping it around his shoulder. Sasuke was nearly a foot taller than him, so even when Hitsugaya stood up the shinobi would be hunched over, but it was better than nothing.
Slowly, Hitsugaya did just that, standing up in an attempt to support Uchiha's weight and hoping that the other boy would be willing to move.]

[He relaxed on the floor again. That was what Sasuke usually said, and that was why he'd sat down in the room with him. But now that he was there, he wasn't sure what he could do to help, if he could help at all. Any optimism he could offer would be painfully fake on his own part.]

[offline] Holy cow, what the hell is this? It's a novel! /cries
Sasuke had gotten virtually everything he'd wanted, and in the middle of it all, he'd forgotten that things like that never lasted long here. In fact, they never lasted long at all. Hitsugaya's whole afterlife seemed to be shaped around preserving that feeling as long as possible and then watching it still slip out of his grasp time and time again. It was obvious Sasuke had been doing the same. And now it was all crashing down on him.
Hitsugaya still remembered the aftermath of Itachi's last disappearance, Uzumaki's many disappearance, and even Kakashi's death. The similarities between all those events were too obvious to ignore, but what had most firmly lodged itself in Hitsugaya's mind was when Sasuke had thought they would all be returning to their own world's. That was the first time he'd seen Sasuke believe that he would be the one to be leaving, not the one being left behind, and Hitsugaya could relate to that feeling like no other.
When Sasuke had thought he'd be leaving Hitsugaya behind, he'd hugged him.
Hitsugaya was not at all comfortable with physical contact. He'd never had to chance in Rukongai to get used to it. But he wanted to do something. Say something. Anything that would help Sasuke to keep going.
With Matsumoto is was usually easy, and he had a handful of insults in reserve for Hinamori, but Sasuke was different. To be frank, Hitsugaya was an intruder when it came to Sasuke. Hitsugaya had known Matsumoto and Hinamori both for some time, had worked with them, shared similar situations, had grown up in the same world. But the closer he got to Sasuke, the more he intruded upon a life he had nothing to do with, customs he didn't know, rules he didn't follow, and emotions he couldn't quite grasp.
If he wanted to do something, he was going to have to intrude. He was going to have to stop treating him the same way he treated Hinamori and Matsumoto. He didn't know everything he needed to know, so he was going to have to learn.
If Uchiha Sasuke thought what a person needed when they were left behind was a hug, then maybe that was what Uchiha Sasuke needed.
It was a logical progression of thoughts, a solidification of what he already knew, but it still didn't feel right. Even saying the word hug felt childish and silly.
That only fueled him further. Sasuke wasn't some needy, little kid; he was a grieving son. And if he needed something that Hitsugaya had the physical capacity to offer, then he could damn well offer it.
After what seemed like ages, Hitsugaya Toushirou finally stood up and tentatively made his way closer to Sasuke.]

He should have known from his experience here that everything was short lived, even if he'd been here for over a year now.
But that still didn't mean it didn't hurt like a mother fucking bitch.
He looked up whenever Hitsugaya got to his feet and made his way closer. What now...?]

He stopped directly in front of Sasuke, frowning at him for just a second before moving one arm over his right shoulder and resting his chin on his left. The very movements made his hesitance obvious - the way he did it as if it were a mission in and of itself, awkward and slow with Sasuke sitting down and Hitsugaya leaning over him.
He didn't say a word.]

[He wasn't going to say anything more. Just stay there as long as Sasuke wanted him to. He hoped that was enough.]
